I've got a friend who's got it very bad for this particular handsome dead guy. His name? Anton Chekhov. He has a strangely modern look to him, doesn't he? He was a doctor and a celebrated writer and playwright and well....have you ever heard a handsome man speak Russian? Your KNEES go weak. And as a parting shot, check this out:

ReplyDeleteBack in the Pleistocene Era, I researched notes for a college production of the Cherry Orchard. I found a photo of Chekhov that was taken when he was still handsome, newly famous, and single. He's sitting in a chair, legs crossed, gazing at the camera with that even, bemused expression, while on the divan next to him two plump and corseted young Russian girls are swooning (no, *leering*) at him.

joyjoy: THAT is the cover image of an autobiography that I read and then fell deeply in love with this dead guy. I kept looking at the cover and staring at him every few pages. I searched for it, too, and it comes up in a teeny picture somewhere. Glad to know there's another person who knows the bemused man's portrait well!
ReplyDeleteAAAAH. I have it bad for Mr. Checkhov, myself! Glad someone else appreciates this. He was such a sweetheart, too! His portrait appears on the back of a book of his I'm currently reading, and I keep getting distracted. Oh yeah, fun fact: that painting was done by his brother!
